The Identity Crisis of the MBA Blogger

I am going to write about a completely divergent topic today. I cannot do more GMAT questions, and just need my mind to wander just so it is away from the CRs and the RCs and the DSs.

I was wondering over the last day or so over this - as an MBA blogger, should you keep you identity secret? Those of us who work would appreciate this question - most employers are not very kind when it becomes known that you intend on leaving them in a year from now. So it is in the best interest of the blogger not to divulge any information that may lead to a possible exposure. You are the mole, that double, not what he/she pretends to be!

On the other hand, putting in some context sensitive info about yourself on these blogs can be a huge plus. You can accumulate comments that are more specific to you, your profile/blog is oft-visited by like-minded MBA bloggers, and this forms a community within a community that is focussed, and much stronger than the sum of its parts.

Personally, I believe that keeping it under wraps has advantages. This could be significant if you are due for promotion sometime towards the end of the year. Why would an employer promote you if you intend to leave within 5-6 months anyway?

I know, I know...it's a matter of drawing that fine line, of not letting anyone know AND getting that elusive promotion AND the admittance letter from X (insert your stretch school here). I just wanted to elicit responses from fellow mates.

Personally, I'd better be keeping my anonymity, as I just started a new job & I'm sure my boss will be very pissed if he finds out that I'm leaving in a year! :-)

I've been at my company for about 4 years. I also have kind of a big mouth, so though I don't mean to, my colleagues know. Oh well. I don't think it'll hurt me much since I just got a huge promotion a few months ago.

While I certainly don't plan on revealing deep, dark secrets or my personal contact information on here, I think anonymity is overrated, because I doubt that any of us are unique enough to be identified based on such specifics as industry or geography. The promotion question isn't an issue in my particular case, because I know that my company has promoted people months before they leave for b-school: they way they see it, showing you adequate respect on your way out may just be enough to get you back once you finish b-school. Hope this helps.

I've kept it a secret at my current company, until the last 3 weeks when I discussed it with another colleague who wants to do an MBA too (or so she thinks) and my former supervisor, whom I want him to write my recommendation letter. I intend to keep it as my own little dirty secret at my new job...

I also had this question in my mind...but the reason why I am not revealing the identity as of now is that pursuing MBA, writing GMAT is still something, which is in nascent stages---I am afraid of projecting an image of someone who seems to be very serious about something, and yet ends up doing nothing. May be its fear of failure. I guess, I will reveal my identity in times to come, once I am more comfortable with the whole idea

Thank you so much for all your comments!

To conclude, anonymity is usually a non-issue in firms with a history of B-schoolers. You are 'expected' to move on after 2-3 years, the incentive for the firm being that you may return to the firm to play a bigger role. On the other hand, you may wish to remain anonymous if you work for a B-school non-friendly firm and/or are due for a promotion around the time that you apply.
